This unit covers all knowledge and skills required to perform electrolysis safely and effectively, including:
-State and territory health, hygiene and skin penetration regulations
-Hair structure, the hair growth cycle and its relationship to permanent hair reduction
-Hair types, follicle characteristics and all factors affecting hair growth
Client consultation, medical history review and treatment planning
-Identifying and managing contraindications — when to treat, restrict or refer
-Galvanic, thermolysis and blend modalities — how each works and when to use each
-Electrical current physics — direct current, alternating current and the electrolytic process
-Probe selection, sizing and accurate insertion technique
-Patch test procedure and skin reaction assessment
-Infection control, sterilisation and sharps disposal to clinical standard
-Post-treatment care, aftercare advice and client rebooking
-Treatment documentation and professional record keeping
-Sustainable operating procedures for water, energy and product conservation

This course is delivered in three stages across all entry streams:

Stage 1 — Self-Paced Online Theory
Complete the SHBBHRS013 Learner Guide and self-paced theory workbook online, in your own time
Includes three theory sessions, quizzes and knowledge activities
Estimated 6–15 hours depending on your entry stream

Stage 2 — Face-to-Face Practical Intensive
Attend a Dermaskin Academy practical training block at a location near you
Maximum 6 students per practical block — hands-on, supervised clinical training
Duration: 2–4 days depending on your entry stream

Stage 3 — Clinical Logbook
Complete 120 hours of supervised electrolysis practice with real clients
Completed in your own time after the face-to-face intensive
Your trainer reviews your logbook and provides feedback throughout

Total program: up to 3 months to complete.

Knowledge Assessment:
Written theory paper covering all knowledge components of SHBBHRS013
Skills Assessment:
5 x Treatment Plans completed on live models
2 x Treatment Plans completed on consecutive models
Treatment areas may include face, chin, upper lip, underarm, leg, bikini and more
Evidence of skills assessment can be demonstrated face-to-face at a Dermaskin Academy location, onsite at your workplace, via Zoom, or submitted as video or photo evidence.
